Blended Learning: A toolkit of effective learning

There is a very important and fundamental relation between learning and personality development. The two interact in a circular process. Different learning problems require different solutions. Each person has a unique requirement and a unique learning style. Contradicting to the teaching formats in the pre digital age, learning environments now have increasingly incorporated ‘e-elements’ into various instructional contexts. There is a complete paradigm shift in the learning process. After experimenting with various media formats and delivery options, Blended learning was found to be one of the best approaches for learning.

A blended learning approach combines face to face classroom methods with computer-mediated activities to form an integrated instructional approach. A learning approach facilitated by the effective combination of different modes of delivery, models of teaching and styles of learning and applying them in an interactive and meaningful learning environment. Blended learning comprises of class-room training, web based training, mobile learning via CD-Rom courses, videos, simulations, and much more.

The ultimate endeavour of a blended approach is to join the best aspects of both face to face and online instruction. The focus of classroom shifts from a presentational format to one of active learning. Classroom time can be used to engage students in advanced interactive experiences.  Meanwhile, the online portion of the course can provide students with multimedia-rich content at any time of day, anywhere the student has internet access, from computer labs, the coffee shop, or the students’ homes. This allows for an increase in scheduling flexibility for students. In addition to flexibility and convenience for students, a blended instructional approach can result in learning outcome gains and increased enrolment retention.

There is no fixed formula for the use of technologies in Blended Learning program. It can include any integration of face to face and online instructional content. The blend will vary depending on the content, the needs of the students, and the preferences of the instructor. It depends on the learners’ requirements, their level of understanding, competencies, and nature and location of the audience and resources available.
